SOUTHFIRST: PRESENTS

MYSTIC RIVER

Curated by Noah Sheldon

5 June Ð 11 June, 2006

SOUTHFIRST gallery is proud to present MYSTIC RIVER, a group show curated by Noah Sheldon.  The exhibition was inspired by the Stephen Shore photograph Merced River and is on view from March 10 Ð April 23.

In 2005 Noah Sheldon and Roger White interviewed the photographer Stephen Shore for The Brooklyn Rail. The interview led Sheldon to imagine an exhibition based on the feeling of ShoreÕs work.  His Merced River photograph of August 13, 1979, shows a group of people camped out on a riverbank in Yosemite National Park. This image is the touchstone for a group show of drawings, sculptural installations, paintings, quilted fabric, and works on paper loosely united by the feeling they evoke and their link to ShoreÕs vision of everyday, ecstatic landscape.

The smallest piece in the show is video shot in extreme close-up across the surface of ShoreÕs image. As if we are reading the photograph, we scan its surface in slow horizontal sweeps. Accompanying commissioned soundtracks lend different emotional valiances to the videoÕs quasi-documentary discovery of tiny photographic moments.

With work by Dike Blair, Peter Coffin, Ian Hundley, Martha Friedman, Matt Keegan, Heather Rowe, Stephen Shore, Paul Wagner, Roger White, a catalogue designed by Paul Wagner, and sound pieces by Warren Ng & Casey Farnum, Koen Holtkamp, Roger White, Christine Edwards & Emily Manzo, and David Griffin.

SOUTHFIRST is located on 60 N6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Gallery hours: Fri, Sat & Sun 1-6 PM and by appointment. Subway: L train to Bedford Avenue. For more information, please contact Southfirst at 718 599 4884 or info@southfirst.org.
