SOUTHFIRST: PRESENTS

THE ORIGIN AND FATE OF THE UNIVERSE
& READING ROOM
5 NOVEMBER – 19 DECEMBER, 2004

SOUTHFIRST gallery is proud to present THE ORIGIN AND FATE OF THE UNIVERSE, an exhibition by Scott Roberts, and READING ROOM by Dan Torop and Jay Sanders.

SOUTHFIRST
presents THE ORIGIN AND FATE OF THE UNIVERSE, an exhibition of sculpture, animated video, and drawings by Scott Roberts.  A room-size black hole held together by wire and duct tape.  A crow flapping ponderously around and around the corner of the room.  A three-dimensional model of a life-sized dog.  If an ineffective Creator made maquettes of the world before actually accomplishing anything, his workroom might look like this.  THE ORIGIN AND FATE OF THE UNIVERSE explores the disconnect between the perfect ideas we envision and their comically laborious realizations.  Its name refers to a chapter in a popular book on physics. Scott Roberts received a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and received an MFA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He lives in Chicago, Illinois. This is the second in a series of exhibitions at Southfirst featuring artists presenting solo shows in New York for the first time.  This series will run from now until April of 2005 and feature six artists.

READING ROOM
, by Dan Torop and Jay Sanders, presents a selection of books and objects in an unobtrusive and comfortable environment. The books, which have been lent by an ever-expanding group of people, are a motley group rarely encountered on any officially required reading list but at the same time well-loved and necessary. The project was inspired by the generosity of book lender Noah Albert and features the giclée prints of poet Robert Grenier, and wooden books by Todd Knopke. Jay Sanders curates, writes and puts together publishing projects in New York. Dan Torop studied Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard, and received an MFA in photography from Yale. He lives and works in New York and Pennsylvania.
