JANE
CALLISTER
EXPANDED
STICKER PROJECT
14 November – 21 December, 2003
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, 14 NOVEMBER 7–9 PM
SOUTHFIRST gallery is proud to present a solo
exhibition by Los Angeles-based painter Jane Callister. The EXPANDED STICKER PROJECT, a room-size installation
of paint, stickers, and sculptural elements, will be on view from 14
November– 21 December, 2003.
The show features work Callister has developed in the past year as a part of
her liquid landscapes series.
These highly textured paintings and installations play with the flow and
drip of paint in tension with the landscape genre. Using colors which refer to
60s super-graphics, the Simpsons cartoons and mapping/color coding systems,
Callister’s landscapes both capture and create the parallel universe we
live in, one in which popular culture has deeply coded our sense of beauty. Painted
into the gallery by Callister and two assistants in the four days before the
show opens, utilizing self-adhesive vinyl stickers and sculptural elements as
well as the complete surface of the gallery walls (and some of the floor), The
Expanded Sticker Project presents painting as you have never seen it before,
with all the splendor of a cartoon sunset.
Jane Callister was born in the Isle of Mann in 1963 and received an
MFA from the University of Nevada in 1994, where she studied with Dave Hickey. Last
year her work was seen in New York in the show “Painting as Paradox”
at Artists Space, and at the Armory Show booth of Susanne Vielmetter. Her work
has recently appeared in Vitamin P: New Perspectives on Painting and the Prague Biennale. She is a professor of
painting at UC Santa Barbara.
The gallery is located on 60 N6th Street
in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Gallery hours: Fri, Sat & Sun 1-6 PM and by
appointment. Subway: L train to Bedford Avenue. For more information, please
